Fully rejuvenated from its 1.5 year holiday, the NYC IGDA Game Development Meetup Group reconvened Tuesday evening, made possible by the fine folks at Arkadium who provided a top class location for the event. Those who attended appreciated the personal nature of the discourse that arose from the gathering.
After a long hiatus, the monthly IGDA Game Developers’ Meetup started up again last week. Scheduled for every fourth Tuesday of the month from 7 pm to 8 pm, this Meetup focuses on discussions regarding the artistic, technical, and business aspects of game development. The format is a presentation by guest speakers followed by a round table discussion on a specific topic in a small group setting. Each meeting concludes with networking and socializing over drinks at a venue nearby.
The first meeting of the year was on the topic of social network games with an emphasis on “Leveraging Facebook for Games”. This Meetup was hosted by Arkadium at their studio on Broadway and 21st St.
Kicking off the meeting was a presentation by Tom Rassweiler, Lead Game Designer at Arkadium. Tom discussed many of the concerns facing developers moving from the casual game space towards social networks, touching upon important factors such as viral growth and monetization options.
The second presentation of the evening was provided by Josh Welber, CTO of Large Animal Games. Josh showed off examples of specific social network games developed by Large Animal, which enabled a lively back and forth discussion with meetup attendees.
The discussions were followed by drinks at The Globe Bar. Nearly all of the meeting attendees participated, and a few others that were unable to make the presentations joined the group at the bar. Tom of Arkadium was on hand to further discuss topics he touched upon during his presentation.
Next month's meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 23rd. The topic of the Meetup will be announced once the lineup of guest speakers has been finalized. Tam, the meetup group's organizer, is also looking for individuals that would be interested in helping him organize these monthly events, so please join the group on Meetup.com and send him a message directly is you are.
