Indie game publisher and online retailer Manifesto Games has decided to close up shop for good. Company CEO Greg Costikyan posted an official announcement yesterday on indie game review website, Play This Thing detailing the decision.
The company, which was founded in 2005, pioneered the downloadable indie game model with numerous games and titles geared towards the core audience. Unfortunately, due to various circumstances ranging from the current economic recession to lack of venture capital, Manifesto was never able to secure a foothold in the tumultuous world of downloadable games.
That’s not to say their efforts were in vain. In fact, just four years later you can see that many other services have sprung up that emulate what Manifesto Games was attempting to do. For instance, Penny Arcade launched Green House in 2008 and currently features many of the more popular indie games developed in the past few years. Companies like Valve and Apple are also helping introduce indie games to the masses with services like Steam and through proprietary platforms such as the iPhone.
The Manifesto Games website will continue to remain up for the time being. Those who are interested in making purchases will be redirected to the individual developer's website or any other assorted portals responsible for those games. In the interim, nycgameindustry.com would like to wish everyone involved with Manifesto Games the best of luck and future success in their next venture. We eagerly await whatever you have in store next.
