As I type this I’m currently flying 31,000 feet over some non-descript portion of Middle America, hurtling towards San Francisco to attend the most important industry event of the year.
This year there is a large focus on - and curious excitement surrounding - social online games. With Farmville kicking-ass and taking names there’s a concentrated push to explore what these games are, how they work, and why they attract so many players.
Back in NYC there are a number of studios exploring these types of games and contributing to the overall understanding of social games as a whole. The fact that these games are often casual in nature, targeting and attracting a widely diverse audience, only plays to our scenes strength as leaders in the casual, mobile, and big game space. Connecting players via online social games is something we should excel at... and it’s an exciting space to be in.
With that said, there’s a lot to see and do here at the week-long event. A few of the crew will be on hand to document what we can of the GDC experience. Regular updates to the site this week will probably be less than usual, but once we return you can expect a roll-out of content related to the various sessions and parties we attended along with general impressions of the show.
In the meantime, feel free to follow us on Twitter for the majority of our GDC coverage this week, and we’ll see you all when we return to Eastern Standard Time!
