Two companies with studios in New York have seen a significant increase in revenue during the first part of 2009. Both Gameloft and THQ (owners of Kaos Studios) recently published their quarterly earnings and the results look very promising.
Gameloft’s mobile games activity accounted for roughly 95% of the company’s half-year sales. The remaining 5% represented their console game offerings. This resulted in consolidated sales of EUR60.1 million. Mobile game activity in general continues to grow rapidly with Gameloft leading the charge.
Revenues for Gameloft's mobile games increased 20% over the first six months of the year thanks to the success of Gameloft’s offerings on Apple’s AppStore. The company continues to be one of the few players in the mobile market that has the resources and know-how to be successful in the downloadable mobile game market.
In the case of THQ, the company has posted record results for its first quarter earnings thanks in large part to the success of the UFC license. UFC 2009 Undisputed drove net sales up 77% to 243.5 million for the company. With over 2.9 million units shipped globally, the publisher is now on track to achieve profitability in 2010. This is in stark contrast to the same period last year when the company posted a 27.2 million net loss.
This can only mean positive things for the publisher’s New York based studio Kaos, who recently announced their latest title in development, Homefront for PS3, Xbox360 and PC.
Great news for these companies and hopefully they can keep it up despite the worldwide economic slowdown.
