Artists learning code?

I'm wondering if there's any other artists on these boards who have taught themselves how to code. Seems like all companies want artists who can code! Once I learned actionscript3, I noticed Javascript and PHP were quite similar. So I'm self teaching myself those as well.

Now my father-inlaw gave me a book on C++ and to my complete surprise I actually understood a lot of the code as I flipped through it.

Oh my god!! Is it possible? Is it realistic for me to delve into hardcore programming... and maybe even like it a little?

Or am I dreaming?

Help me my brothers and sisters of code!!! I seek guidance in this dangerous valley of double and single quotation, supervariables and constants!!!

Re: Artists learning code?

I was going to goto school for traditional animation before changing gears and going to a game dev degree at Full Sail. That degree was pretty much 95% hardcore programming classes.

So yeah its definitely possible for an artist to pick up coding easily. Once you get good with c++ or any other language really the rest of them become somewhat readable and its just a matter of learning syntax.

Re: Artists learning code?

With some of the differences between languages being so subtle I'll have a rough time with syntax for a while. Double quotes, single quotes, variables in caps, escapes, etc. I make teeny syntax mistakes sometimes and I've had moments where I pulled my hair out over problems that turned out to be a misplaced semicolon.
