IGN lists the "25 Greatest Consoles of All-Time"

http://www.ign.com/top-25-consoles/index.html

"Each console on the list ahead was selected for its influence on the industry and the gaming culture as a whole, with special consideration for their benchmark titles, peripherals, monetary success, and total hardware sold. But beyond sales figures and critical reception, one of the biggest contributing factors in our ranking process was our lasting impressions of each console, and how it contributed to our love for gaming and inspired us to become involved in the industry."

25. Magnavox Odyssey
24. Atari Jaguar
23. Atari 5200
22. 3DO
21. Magnavox Odyssey 2
20. Sega Master System
19. NeoGeo
18. Sega Saturn
17. Atari 7800
16. Nintendo Gamecube
15. Playstation 3
14. Intellivision
13. TurboGraphx-16
12. Colecovision
11. Xbox
10. Nintendo Wii
9. Nintendo 64
8. Sega Dreamcast
7. Playstation
6. Xbox 360
5. Sega Genesis
4. SNES
3. PS2
2. Atari 2600
1. NES

Keep in mind this list isn't about the "best gaming libraries". A couple of surprises for me. I love my 360 but I don't think it should be listed as #6 yet. I also feel that the original Playstation should be at LEAST #6.

I'm not too sure about the 2600 at #2. I would personally put it at #5 and slide everything else down 1 spot. However, it's pretty tough for me to rank the 2600 since I can't really relate to it. It was before my time (I turned 24 a month ago), and I haven't really SEEN anyone play it. I think it terms of impact to the industry alone, it's #2 in those regards but I can't say the games have aged as well as the SNES, Genesis, PS2 or NES. I believe it's a pretty sophisticated discussion though and I'd like to read the more "senior" :p members' opinions.

2600 was ok. It was actually my first console... I started a little late.

Fun list. Though in all honesty, Dreamcast should and always will be #1. ;-)

Re: IGN lists the "25 Greatest Consoles of All-Time"

haha yeah. I loved the dreamcast. It had such a great library of games, especially considering it only had about 2 years of support. Looking back I really credit the dreamcast with making me a "gamer". I mean I had NES and Genesis when they came out but DC hooked me like nothing before. It was then I really started to follow what games were coming out, and start to look into the different gaming genres and what they had to offer. I'm actually pretty happy it was listed as #8 considering it wasn't that successful commercially, though the rankings don't have any real meaning haha.
