The Come Out & Play Festival will celebrate its fifth year of street game fun the weekend of June 4-6 in New York City. Event organizers are currently accepting applications for games.
Each year the Come Out & Play settles in a different neighborhood and explores the limits of play and games in that space. They've played among the galleries of Chelsea, throughout the thriving nightlife of the Lower East Side, and amidst the throngs of tourists in Times Square. This year the festival lands in Brooklyn to explore a new space and a new set of challenges, and is graciously hosted by the Brooklyn Lyceum in Park Slope.
Come Out & Play is a three-day festival of street games. The festival seeks to provide a forum for new types of public games and play. The goal is to bring together a public eager to rediscover the world around them through play, with designers interested in producing innovative new games and experiences. Oh yeah, and to have city-size fun.
Right now festival organizers are accepting applications for this year's games. They are looking to feature everything from the low-tech to the high-tech. They're primarily interested in fun, innovative games that make interesting use of the city. Organizers are also looking for a handful of games that we can pair to specific timeslots, local partners and other sponsors.
Check out the website (comeoutandplay.org) for more information on the specific "featured" spots they need brave game designers for. The festival spreads out across New York City, but will be based primarily around South Brooklyn. Designers have the chance to explore the potential of play in areas ranging from the residential streets of Park Slope, the post-industrial canals of Gowanus, the tamed wilderness of Prospect Park, and the historic texture of Green-Wood Cemetery.
