I have some questions on what to display in a portfolio if you have no games created at this point. The only application I have developed even remotely related to game development is an A.I. program using the A* algorithm. I have started to work with Unity3D to perhaps get something small working to add to a portfolio, but I don't know if this is a good start point to developing games.

Can I use the A.I. application as starting point to the portfolio? Also, I was just curious where other developers started, did you start with a simple game or go for the wow effect off that bat? I am not looking for someone to hold my hand ,I just don't want to waste anymore time!

Posted to: Online Portfolio posting

Hi CG,

I'm using wordpress, and I highly recommend it for personal sites and blogs. It's not hard to theme if you know a little php (javascript helps too). I hear Joomla is simple but lacks some functionality- but I haven't used it myself. I use drupal all the time at work, unfortunately that's not easy to pick up but you can do MUCH more with it than blog.

If you're finding that designing a template from scratch is taking up too much time, there's no shame in looking for a "base" theme to start with. Then you can customize it and make it your own. Just make sure the theme you use as a base royalty is free/open source or paid for :) Some of the paid ones are very nice if you have no time to spare and need a "ready to go" site that is nicely pimped.

Whatever you do, don't buy anything from websitetemple.com. The majority of their wordpress offerings are royalty free themes they're trying to make a dime off of.

I can't wait to see your site! Keep us posted.

Posted to: Online Portfolio posting

Your guy's portfolios are looking great. I always find it interesting how people choose to display their work.

What did you use to build them? Is it a portfolio template or did you all code them up yourselves?

I'm currently working on mine, but it's coming along pretty slowly. Hopefully I'll have something to share with you all soon!

Posted to: Online Portfolio posting
